The project was started at the beginning of 2000 by Harald Ponce de Leon, with the first public release appearing in March as an example resource study of how an online shopping system works, then called The Exchange Project.
Since it's introduction, the project has attracted an ever growing community* and has been able to put a team of dedicated users together to advance and realize project goals.
In December 2001, the project was renamed from The Exchange Project to osCommerce to show its maturity and to strengthen its presence in the Open Source community.
Not only does a dedicated team exists that directs the project, but also a thriving community where members help each other out, contribute work and features for the project, and participate in the development of the project.
The combination of dedicated team members, an active and growing community, and a bonding of the projects philosophies has insured the success of the project.
